I'm currently reading the book The Discovery of Being (Rollo May).
The last couple of days I’ve been thinking about something. The world we live in.
It is called an information society, and we are getting more and more information and knowledge about everything. But something that you can’t google is who you are inside. What happen inside us when living in this world?
Inside us there is a world many of us know very little about, because we are so focused on seeking the objective truth, rather than seeking what's really makes life meaningful. I think many of us have this idea that happiness is the same as finding meaning in your life, but if you're searching for happiness you will only find yourself running from life, as well as yourself. I think one have to find their own meaning with their life, and that can only be find in you. And to find that you have to first of all get to know you and stop running from life itself.
Just like the opening scene of Hamlet; “To be or not to be. That is the question.”
To be includes our existence. And by our existence I mean everything that makes you, you. I think we talk all to little about the important things in life. More big talk and less small talk! It’s like it became uncool not to care too much, how come?
To avoid tough questions like love, death, anxiety and sorrow, is also to avoid life and the things we cherish the most. Because love and compassion is all connected with those emotions. There is no bad or good emotions, that is just something that the society teaches us to think. And if we’re not allowed to talk about it, then how can we live our life to the fullest? How can we understand each other? Help each other?
Many of todays problem with depression, I believe is a consequence of this. But to feel a normal level of anxiety also means that you have experienced freedom. I think if we lived a more fuller life, with less distractions (material goals) we would have more compassion for each other.
I mean, I personally love the fact that we live in an age where information is just a google search away, because I think knowledge is supposed to be shared and free for everyone to take part of. But sometimes I feel that wisdom is forgotten in the shadow of smartness. There is a difference. And why not strive for both? Like Einstein once said; The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science. He to whom the emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand wrapped in awe, is as good as dead.”
I may be dreamer. But what else can you be in this world. And what is a human without dreams? Reality is full of dreams. It is built from dreams and visions.
However, I can really recomend you to read this book. I got mine in swedish, but it's an american author so I guess english is even better :-) :-) :-)
