Nathan Small was born at a young age in beautiful sunny Croydon (South
East London) and began taking professional standard pictures aged around 6. His mother didn’t agree with his creative vision, and since this was before the time of digital when photography was bloody expensive, his little red compact was hidden in a drawer for many years.

Fast forward 23 years and Nathan now spends his time between London and New York, focusing on fashion, portraiture and advertising photography as well as working on numerous personal projects. He has been included in several group exhibitions, most notably the Taylor Wessing Prize at The National Portrait Gallery.

He says of his style “My work puts strong emphasis on graphics, clean lines and bold compositions. I’m very influenced by the Russian Constructivists and when I’m building a picture I really try to think like a graphic designer carefully placing the individual elements. I always try to make the women in my images strong, powerful and dominant. I loved Helmut Newton growing up and found the women in his pictures so sexy, so he has influenced my approach a lot.”
