• MATEUS X SAM BARON AND YATZER

    Written by Fashion Tales

During Maison & Objet the leading Swedish design company Mateus is launching a new collection of ceramics. The collection, called “Mateus meets Sam Baron meets Yatzer” is a collaboration with award-winning French designer Sam Baron and Costas Voyatzis, founder of the Yatzer design portal. A tribute to the company’s origins, the collection stands out in its clean lines and stylistically pure design language. The collection is also characterized by a subtle color palette and – as with all Mateus ceramics – every piece is handmade and handpainted. The collection comprises plates, a bowl, a jug and a cup in different sizes and colors.

Mateus has met worldwide success with its popular ceramics in lively, hand-painted colors and decorative patterns. The new collection, created in a palette of neutral, muted colors, marks a different approach for Mateus. The subtle aesthetics are a nod from the design duo to the oldest method of crafting ceramics. With the new collection, Sam Baron and Costas Voyatzis pay tribute to Mateus and the company’s 25 years in ceramics.

The collection “Mateus meets Sam Baron meets Yatzer” was created as a tribute to ceramics. We want to bring to the fore the origins of ceramics, one of mankind’s earliest art forms, which Mateus has taken to a new level,” say Sam Baron and Costas Voyatzis. “The contrast between the unglazed structure and the hand-painted color palette gives the pieces a contemporary feel without detracting from their handcrafted appeal.”

Mateus was founded in 1993 by Teresa Mateus Lundahl. The company’s mission, then and now, is to add warmth to the home and celebrate the joy of getting together over good food and conversation at a beautifully set table. Teresa, born and raised in Portugal, returned to her roots, marrying traditional Portuguese craftsmanship with her entrepreneurial skills set and love for ceramics, form and design.

  • Pillow Talk at Sven-Harrys Konstmuseum

The artists Ulla Kraitz and Gustav Kraitz
    - a love that brings art to life with fire

The pillow is a key element in the autumn exhibition Pillow Talk at Sven-Harrys Konstmuseum, which opens on 29 August. This sculptural volume reflects the hard and the soft – symbolising the Kraitz couple’s experiences of joys and sorrows in life. The years of hardship as a forced labourer in the Soviet coal mines taught Gustaf Kraitz to find unexpected places where he could rest his head. Ulla Kraitz constantly revisits the origin of life in her artistic practice, in the form of embryos and pregnant women. Here, the mother’s soft breasts symbolise the first pillow and security in life.

Gustav Kraitz was released nearly 70 years ago from a prison camp in the former Soviet Union, where he had shuffled coal for five years bent over on his knees. Today, he is 92 and still shuffles fuel, but “for his own pleasure”. This summer, Gustav fires what may be his last ceramic works in the kiln outside his studio and home in Skåne. The works, created with his partner, the artist Ulla Kraitz, will be shown at Sven-Harrys Konstmuseum this autumn. The exhibition also features, for the first time in 20 years, a composition painted by Ulla Kraitz on the theme of life.

Ulla Kraitz is a painter and sculptor. She attended the Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design, before continuing her studies in Spain. Gustav Kraitz studied at the Academy of Art in Budapest, but fled to Sweden in 1956, during the Hungarian uprising. In 1960, before they knew each other, Gustav and Ulla exhibited together at a gallery in Stockholm; they married later the same year. For nearly six decades, they have lived and worked side by side in Förslöv, Skåne – two artists with separate identities, united by art and their indefatigable interest in ceramic materials and techniques. They have shown their work together all over the world, at museums, in sculpture parks and public spaces.

The quest for the same glazes as the Chinese masters in Song dynasty’s golden era of ceramics (960–1279 CE) has been a source of passion and life-long experimenting for both. And yet, they have never sought to copy; with untiring exploration, they have mastered the technique, developed it and made it their own. To get the glaze right, Gustav built a kiln based on Chinese models. The firing method is demanding and requires constant stoking.

You have to be dedicated to want to work like this. It’s tough and you need to fight, and not many people are prepared to do that,” says Ulla.

We’ve chosen what is perhaps the most difficult method,” says Gustaf, “but it’s the one that gives the best results.”

  • Absolut Iconic

    Written by Fashion Tales

The Absolut Company uncovers 30 years of iconic fashion during Fashion Week Stockholm. For the first time ever, The Absolut Company will display selected pieces from the Absolut Vodka’s Fashion archive, representing more than three decades of progressive fashion history. Brand new additions by up and coming designers HAAL, Nhu Duong and Per Götesson will also be revealed.

A 1987 portrait of model Rachel Williams in a silver mini dress by designer David Cameron marked the beginning of Absolut Fashion, a long and fruitful collaboration between Absolut Vodka and the fashion world. Over the following 30 years, Absolut Vodka teamed up with some of the world’s most prominent and progressive designers, photographers and models, creating unique campaigns and capsule collections that pushed the boundaries of fashion, photography and advertising. Including early collaborations with names such as Helmut Lang, Marc Jacobs, Jean Paul Gaultier and Tom Ford the Absolut Fashion initiative did not just capture the history of fashion, but helped shape it.

The collaborations have spawned a vast archive of unique fashion and photography, for years tucked away in an underground storage in the deep woods of southern Sweden. During an exclusive event at Fashion Week Stockholm S/S 2019, selected pieces from the archive will be displayed as part of an interactive installation. Following their tradition to support pioneering designers, The Absolut Company is also uncovering brand new additions to the Absolut Fashion collection by up and coming Swedish designers HAAL, Nhu Duong and Per Götesson – giving the audience a glimpse of the iconic fashion of tomorrow. The Absolut Iconic event will be hosted at Ahouse in central Stockholm on Tuesday 28 August.
